United Airlines Business Class

United Polaris business class features lie-flat seats, dedicated lounges, and Star Alliance connectivity from major US hubs.

United Polaris is the carrier’s international business class product, serving over 120 long-haul destinations from its US hubs at Newark, San Francisco, Chicago O’Hare, and Houston. Launched in 2016, Polaris represented a significant upgrade for United’s premium cabin with custom-designed seats, improved bedding, and dedicated ground services. United is a founding Star Alliance member with one of the largest international route networks from the United States.

Seat and cabin

The flagship Polaris seat is a direct-aisle-access lie-flat pod in a 1-2-1 configuration on 777-300ER and 787-10 aircraft. Seats are 22 inches wide with 78 inches of pitch and convert to a flat bed with Saks Fifth Avenue bedding including a gel-cooled pillow and duvet. The 767-300ER uses a 2-1-2 layout where window passengers lack direct aisle access—avoid these aircraft when possible.

Dining and service

Polaris dining features multi-course meals designed with input from celebrity chefs. Expect options like seared short rib, poached salmon, and ice cream sundae service. Pre-departure beverages include champagne. The wine programme is curated by Master Sommelier Doug Frost. Service quality varies by crew but has improved markedly since the Polaris rebrand.

Lounge access

United operates dedicated Polaris Lounges at Newark, San Francisco, Chicago O’Hare, Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington Dulles. These lounges offer à la carte dining, daybeds, shower suites, and a quiet atmosphere. They are among the best airline-operated business class lounges in the US. Star Alliance Gold members access partner lounges at outstations.

FAQ

Does United Polaris have direct aisle access on all flights?

No. The 1-2-1 Polaris seat is available on 777-300ER and 787-10 aircraft. Older 767-300ER planes use a 2-1-2 configuration without universal direct aisle access. Check your aircraft type before booking.

Can I book United Polaris with miles?

Yes. United MileagePlus miles redeem directly for Polaris awards. Star Alliance partners like Avianca LifeMiles, Air Canada Aeroplan, and Turkish Miles & Smiles also offer United Polaris awards, often at better rates.

Are Polaris Lounges open to all business class passengers?

Polaris Lounges are open to passengers flying in United Polaris business class on international departures. Star Alliance Gold members without a Polaris ticket cannot access these lounges—they use the United Club instead.
